On an old hill on the isle of Santorini, a farmer finds a bone. When they dig it up they find the skeleton of an enormous man with a hole in the middle of his head. The thought of a giant with one eye must have been a frightening thing. But that is what happens when you unearth an ancient artifact.
In creating Ellaria, I was inspired by the world of archaeology. So many wonders that we try to make sense of but until time decides the unveiling event, we can only touch the surface of what once was. It took me a while to build Ellaria. I wanted it to have a history like the cyclops. What happened in the first battle between Light and Darkness? What did Misha really do to defeat the darkness?
My protagonist Bhryen finds that artifact sticking out in the sand and the problem with artifacts is that the more you dig, the deeper you fall into mystery. Ellaria is a place rich in its traditions but each of them has a tale, cloaking what really happened. Each of these traditions are also tied to characters in the book. With time they will unfold. As Bhryen lands into the center of a mystery, he struggles with what he knows as truth and what is legend. Ellaria is a labyrinth that he wanders through with each of her characters in a masquerade. History is always challenging us to change our paradigm. Life is always challenging us to change ourselves. In book one Bhryen begins the first step in his evolution.
What began for me as free writing grew into a nation and then a world. The backstory of each character even those long dead was what kept me going. I wanted to see their legacy come forth. The time spent was worth it. Getting to know Misha and the first battle gave me a deeper understanding of what I had to do with Bhryen. He’s a good kid but as Brother Isra to Bhryen comment shows-.
“ I would not have thought so, the way you float in and out. Shows what you can be when you want to.”
How many of us floated in and out as a teenager? We had more important things to do at the time. Well, great Cyclops, you who once towered above us all, may you slumber in peace knowing that without you our lives would have been so mediocre. Thank you for that spark igniting us all.
